2019 Squawking Magpie Counting Crows Chardonnay

Hawke's Bay

New Zealand

2019 Counting Crows Chardonnay is a wine with power and elegance. Toasted almond, peach and tangerine flavors mingle with savory notes of warm gravels and cinnamon. The palate is generous with sustained depth of flavor. Purity and a silky freshness linger on the palate.

Winemaker's notes

Vintage 2019
The start of the 2019 growing season was wet and cool, but this season will be remembered for the glorious last 3 months of fine warm dry weather allowing grapes to be picked in ideal conditions. Disease pressure was low; grapes were ripe with good flavor concentration and excellent sugar and acid balance.

Winemaking
The hand-picked grapes were gently pressed and the juice transferred to 500 l and 225 l oak barrels for fermentation. 15% of the barrels were new. Indigenous yeast and bacteria carried out the alcoholic and mal-lactic fermentations. The lees were gently stirred, and the wine remained in oak barrels and puncheons for 15 months.

A roast crisp pork belly is entertaining at its best, without the fuss. Roast pork belly works best with a wine that has a high level of acidity plus a touch of sweetness – a young Pinot Noir or Dry Riesling would be perfect.
